After completing Idlewild, a novella I wrote as a palate cleanser, I was sitting around minding my own business when an idea for another novel began materializing. It was as simple as that; the muse would not let go. (Side note: The working title was Hey Jude, but I eventually changed it to Fragile Garden. Although song titles are not copyright protected, it could have come across as an attempt to capitalize on Lennon/McCartney’s work.)
Perhaps Dr. Gerber, a character in my first novel – Residues, sparked the idea, I don’t know, but I again contemplated the consequences where someone intends doing a good thing but results in the opposite effect. Sometimes people just interfere even though their intentions are noble. Other times, their actions can bring about positive outcomes.
I chose to explore the situation where things turn out for the worse with negative effects for all involved. It didn’t take long to settle on a husband and wife team – Matt and Judith Carr. They both believe they are doing the right thing, although the husband is operating covertly without his wife’s knowledge.
What I had expected didn’t come about. Instead, Judith who legitimately installs a much needed service, is obstructed by Matt’s covert vigilante interference. In the process, there are more losers than winners, including Matt and Judith.
Matt’s actions raised a few questions which I left to the reader to consider. Effectively, it comes back to The Doctrine of Double Effect – where an illegal action can be forgiven – based on its intent, if the outcome has positive results. Of course, there’s more to it than that, but that’s the core premise.
Back cover blurb
Following her appointment as Human Resources Vice President, Judith Carr initiates a support group for victims of domestic violence – oblivious of her husband Matt’s well-intentioned, covert involvement.
His felonious activities alert the authorities, and Judith learns her silence implicates her in the death of a respected surgeon.
Shocked by the extreme violence, she is forced to reconsider her marital vows, along with the fraying of her own moral fabric.
Working towards a common goal from opposing ends, they become victims of their own design – sparking the erosion of their relationship, and all Judith has worked for.
But a greater threat is looming. An aggrieved narcissistic husband is retaliating, and will drag their lives into the equation.
It’s just a matter of time; he’s closer than they know.
