Articles
These articles should not be considered a typical blog. They’re background and supplemental information related to their respective novels that may be of interest to some. However, that may well be what defines a blog – you decide, especially as I’ve provided for a General section that is not associated with the novels.
As I've mentioned elsewhere, I only had two goals when deciding to try my hand at writing; test my perseverance and endurance. That also was all I knew about writing - that it was difficult for those reasons. I was partially right, but since then, of course, I've gained a deeper understanding.
The domestic violence backdrop for Fragile Garden is sad and disturbing. As in Residues, I was not expecting to be drawn so deeply into the subject, yet, it was required. That sent me on a journey into a world we’re aware of, but hopefully, have never experienced.
Fragile Garden raises more disquieting questions than provides answers. There were times during the writing I pondered if it might not be better to become apathetic, and let people solve their own problems. This may be the stance of many people - just walk away. Personally, I’m grateful to those who don’t, and who will take the risk to help others - sometimes to their own detriment.
We've all run into someone like Wade Coburn - the protagonist in Idlewild. Perhaps antagonist would be more apt. Seeming cantankerous and abrasive on the surface, peeling away his layers reveals someone entirely different - for those who care to take the trouble.
A few months after completing Residues, I realized I missed the writing process. I've heard there is at least one book in all of us, so what I had achieved may not be that noteworthy after all. Did I have it in me to write another novel? I decided to give it a shot.
The writing of Residues was a strenuous experience with a steep learning curve. It started like a marathon, where the first 200 yards were easy. The more I wrote the more I realized just how little I knew about what I was doing.
