To reveal his hidden self, I subjected Wade to a series of events; a golf lesson, his loyalty to friends, his zest for life, and his love for his granddaughter among others. I was surprised that the golf lesson was one of the events that stood out for many people. The chapter was titled; ‘A phallic golf lesson‘. Now, although it can be considered a click-bait inspired title, it was an accurate description of that scene, and showed me the power of sexual innuendo. However, even that spectacle turned out well for Wade – in the end.
In Residues I wrote a tender, middle-aged love scene, and such a scenario again presented itself in Idlewild. In the case of the latter, the focus is on partnership and love with the physical only implied. I enjoyed writing this aspect of Idlewild attempting to reframe the perception of love between same sex partners, and how the stigma had scarred Harriet, one of the female characters. Wade facilitates their relationship – portraying him in the best possible light. Below is an excerpt from a scene where Wade is asking a favor of them.
“So, let me understand this; you want us to drive you to a strip club?” Harriet asked.
“Well, I won’t be staying; I’m only going to make the arrangements. The girl will be coming to my place.” Harriet and Cynthia spoke at once.
“You want to bring her here?” Wade nodded.
“Wade, you’re playing with fire,” Cynthia said.
“Hey, it’s what I do. So, you’ll take me?” Cynthia sat back and started laughing softly.
“I never would have thought I’d agree to drive a guy to a strip club. But then again, I also never would have thought I’d be sitting here with Harriet,” she said taking Harriet’s hand. “OK stud, we’re on.”
I enjoyed addressing the stigma of strip dancers. It can be a polarizing topic, and I wanted to use the dancers as a device to illustrate this. If I’ve learned anything, it’s that things are seldom what they seem. When you’re free from predisposition and are open minded, the concealing layers reveal another dimension many will never see, or don’t want to see. There is a scene where a magical moment renders the dancers’ nudity irrelevant.
If I told you Wade would get the strip dancers to give his seventeen-year-old granddaughter some life advice, you’d probably be horrified. You may have a different insight once the layers are stripped away – no pun intended.
